Satisfaction and exhaustion level of family health unit employees in Kayseri province

Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of exhaustion and influencing factors of family health employees who actively provide primary care services in the province of Kayseri.

Methods: This research aimed to investigate 420 family health employees who are employed at family health centers in the province of Kayseri in the year 2019. The Maslach Burnout Inventory and a questionnaire consisting of 26 questions inquiring demographic and general information has been used. The response percentage to the questionnaires was 77.4%.

Results: The majority of the respondents (96.6%) were females and they had been in the profession for an average of 15.59 ±7.2 years. Of all respondents, 78.8% stated that they had chosen their profession willingly. The average working period in the family health system was 6.7 ± 2.9 years and 59.1% stated their working position as relevant. Employees mostly (90.8%) stated to be unhappy due to missing valid address and phone information of patients in and 81.8% expressed dissatisfaction because of an unclear job description, while 79.4% was concerned about their future. Family health employees who are employed in Kayseri and who didn’t choose their profession willingly, those between the ages of 20-29, who work in the provincial center, work overtime, are unmarried and who are not happy with the family health system showed significant differences regarding exhaustion whereas factors such as sex, profession, level of income and level of education did not lead to statistically significant differences.

Conclusion: We found intermediate levels of exhaustion among family health employees in Kayseri concerning emotional exhaustion, desensitisation and personal accomplishment.
