Abstract

Objective: Obesity and depression, is an important health problem whose frequency is ever-increasing. The aim of this study is to examine whether there is a relationship between obesity and depression in obese and non-obese participants.

Methods: A total of 199 individuals in the 18-65 age group, 92 obese and 107 non-obese, were included in this study. Age groups were categorized according to mean values. Body measurements were conducted through Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis. Obesity was classified as ≥30 according to body mass index of the World Health Organization. Depression cases in both groups were studied by using The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Depression was graded according to the scale in which all participants had a scale point average.

Results: A total of 118 cases of depression were detected in both groups (59.3%). The risk of depression in women with obesity was 3.1 times higher (OR=3.111, GA:1.262-7.667) than in men, and the difference was statistically significant. The risk of depression in non-obese participants was found to be 2.4 times higher in women (OR=2.449, GA: 0.939- 4.387) than in men, but the confidence interval was found to be including “1” number, and the difference was close to statistical significance. In all participants, the risk of depression was found to be 2.7 times higher in women (OR=2.680, GA:1.246-5.938) than in men, and the difference was found to be statistically significant. The risk of depression in obese subjects was 2.9 times higher (OR=2.453, GA:1.363-6.713) than in the non-obese subjects, and the difference was statistically significant.

Conclusion: In this study, the risk of depression in obese and female participants was found to be statistically significantly higher than that in non-obese and males.
