Demographic features and indications of pregnant women with previous cesarean section

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate sociodemographic factors, previous cesarean section indications and their differences according to hospital types (private/public) among the pregnant women with previous cesarean section who attended to Bak›rköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital antenatal clinic.
Methods: A cross sectional analytic study is planned among 476 pregnant women with previous cesarean section who were attended to Bak›rköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training Hospital’s antenatal clinic between August 2006-March 2007.
Results: 68.4% of the participants were between 20-29 years old, average age was 28.4±4.6, average number of pregnancies was 2.8±1.3, average number of parity was 1.4±0.7 and average number of living children was 1.3±0.6. Educational level and working status had significant impact on cesarean preference (p<0.001). Indications for cesarean section were, acute fetal distress, breech presentation and cephalopelvic disproportion and there was statisticaly significant difference between private and public hospitals (p<0.001). The most common reason for cesarean section was breech presantation in public hospitals. Cesarean indications differs significantly between private and public hospitals regarding to educational level (p=0.026) and working status (p=0.023) of participants. Women with on-demand cesarean section mostly preferred private hospitals (p=0.002).
Conclusions: Educational level and working status were two important factors on prefering cesarean section. Well educated and working women prefer caesarean section and private hospitals more.
